Advancements in Nuclear Testing
The economic focus of the region is increasingly tied to advanced technological infrastructure. In Emery County, the Utah San Rafael Energy Lab (USREL) serves as a specialized testing site for Valar Atomics Ward 250 test reactor. This Generation IV high-temperature gas reactor, developed under the U.S. Department of Energy's Reactor Pilot Program, achieved full-power fueled criticality on June 18, 2026.
Nuclear Reactor Capabilities
The Ward 250 microreactor utilizes tri-structural isotropic (TRISO) fuel particles designed to remain stable under extreme conditions. According to the Utah San Rafael Energy Lab, the reactor is engineered to contain radioactive fission products effectively and is intended to scale up to a 5 MW design. These helium-cooled, graphite-moderated reactors are being tested to meet the power demands of industrial heat applications, carbon-neutral fuel synthesis, and AI data centers.
