A commercial structure fire struck the Costa Vida restaurant located at 630 West 1425 North in Layton on the night of Saturday, July 4, 2026. Layton Dispatch received multiple 911 calls around 11:54 p.m. reporting flames visible through the building's roof.
Firefighters from the Layton City Fire Department responded to the scene with assistance from the Hill Air Force Base Fire Department and the Layton Police Department. Upon arrival, crews encountered an active fire involving the roof.
Suppression efforts were complicated by the building's unique roof construction, which featured a pitched roof enclosed by parapet walls and partially covered by a flat roof system. This design created concealed spaces that allowed the fire to spread. As conditions worsened and a portion of the roof collapsed, incident commanders transitioned from an interior attack to defensive operations to protect firefighters.
On Sunday morning at approximately 8:30 a.m., crews returned to the scene following reports of smoke. Firefighters identified a rekindle within the roof assembly and performed overhaul operations to extinguish remaining hot spots.
The Layton City Fire Marshal's Office and Layton Police detectives began an investigation into the origin and cause of the fire on Sunday morning. While investigators are looking into whether fireworks may have contributed to the incident, the official cause is still under investigation.
Damage to the building is estimated between $1.0 million and $1.2 million, resulting in a near-total loss. The business is expected to remain closed during the recovery process. No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported.
