The Box Elder County Commission voted Wednesday to adopt Ordinance No. 654, establishing a temporary 180-day land use regulation that suspends the processing of new applications for data centers and related power plants within unincorporated areas.
Purpose of the temporary moratorium
According to a press release from Box Elder County, the ordinance aims to provide county leaders with time to study zoning classifications, development standards, and infrastructure considerations. The temporary regulation is intended to allow for research, public participation, and policy development before long-term decisions are made regarding digital infrastructure.
Exemptions for existing major projects
County officials noted that the temporary pause does not affect the Stratos Project, as that project is located within an area governed by the Military Installation Development Authority. The ordinance applies only to regions where Box Elder County retains land-use authority.
