The U.S. Forest Service reported Sunday that while containment has reached 47%, intense fire activity and shifting monsoonal moisture continue to challenge suppression efforts across the Manti-La Sal National Forest.
Aerial Tactics and Ground Operations
According to a July 12 update from the U.S. Forest Service-Manti-La Sal National Forest, the fire began on June 26, 2026, and has already destroyed five structures. Operations are currently focused on an aggressive direct attack along the active fire edge. To protect the western perimeter within the bluffs, a specialized helitack crew was inserted into Dark Canyon.
In addition to ground efforts, aerial operations have played a critical role in suppression. Photographic records from InciWeb show helicopters equipped with "Bounty" buckets dipping water from Monticello Lake on July 11 to combat the blaze. Crews from the Ramona Helitack were also documented conducting morning briefings at the Blanding Airport on July 10 to coordinate these air operations.

Fire managers are employing strategic fuel management techniques to control the fire's spread. On the south slope, officials are leveraging grass and brush fuel types to keep a spot fire contained within heavy timber. Meanwhile, a continuous retardant line has been established from Abajo Peak over to Jackson Ridge specifically to protect a critical communication site located on the peak.
Ground crews have also achieved notable progress in certain sectors. Firefighters successfully secured containment lines off Steamboat Point and Dry Mesa. However, a spot fire remains active on the north-facing slope of Jackson Ridge, requiring ongoing vigilance from the 46 crews currently assigned to the incident.

The scale of the response involves a massive deployment of personnel and equipment. As of July 12, the U.S. Forest Service reported 1,467 total personnel assigned to the fire, including 68 engines, 15 helicopters, 46 crews, 3 dozers, and 20 water tenders.

Due to intense fire activity experienced in Indian Creek, some personnel were pulled back from the front lines for firefighter safety and reassigned to continue preparing the Harts Draw Road. All National Forest lands, roads, and trails within the Monticello Ranger District are closed to the public. Additionally, the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park is fully closed to support safety operations. The Bureau of Land Management has also temporarily closed all BLM-managed public lands west of Harts Draw Road and north through the Indian Creek Corridor to Indian Creek Falls, including the Sweet Alice Wilderness Study Area, Dark Canyon, and Beef Basin.

While daytime temperatures are trending slightly cooler, ranging from the mid-80s to near 90 degrees, officials are wary of developing threats.
On July 12, incident meteorologist Tom Schuldt and members of the Great Basin Complex Incident Management Team launched a weather balloon at San Juan High School to collect vital data. The primary operational concern remains the forecast for isolated to scattered thunderstorms after 12:00 PM, which may bring minimal precipitation but carry a high potential for lightning and erratic, severe outflow winds.

As the fire continues to move through the landscape, it is creating a "mosaic burn" pattern. Photographic evidence from July 11 shows that the fire has resulted in a patchwork of burned and unburned areas, a phenomenon that can benefit wildlife habitat and biodiversity.
Firefighters continue to patrol burned areas to find and extinguish remaining hot spots and smoldering embers. Officials expressed hope that complete containment from the southern line back to South Cottonwood would be achieved by the end of the July 12 shift.
