Sharon Barner, a 79-year-old student at Weber State University, has gained millions of followers on social media by sharing her university anecdotes. Barner, who is originally from Ogden, is currently pursuing an associate degree with the ultimate goal of obtaining a bachelor's degree in creative writing.
Barner described herself as an unconventional student after returning to the classroom following a 40-year hiatus spent working and raising a family. She has documented her classes and experiences through social media platforms.
On TikTok, under the handle grandmagreat, Barner has reached 2.3 million followers who follow her stories, which often include her husband. On Instagram, she is known as iamgrandmagreat and has 8,366 followers. Barner noted that a daughter and granddaughter instructed her on how to become an influencer and TikTok creator.
Barner has five children, 16 grandchildren, and recently welcomed her ninth great-grandchild. Weber State University held a special for Barner, expressing pride in her as a student.
