A 28-year-old Tooele County man who was pulled from Sand Hollow Reservoir over the weekend after a near-drowning has been declared brain dead, according to his family.
Brayan Jhonatan Miranda Ramos was rescued Saturday after he became fatigued while swimming at Sand Hollow State Park and was unable to continue. Bystanders saw him in distress, pulled him from the water unconscious and began CPR before first responders arrived and took over medical care.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. Saturday at Sand Hollow Reservoir. Officials stated that Miranda Ramos was not wearing a life jacket at the time.
He was airlifted by Intermountain Life Flight to a hospital, where officials initially described the incident as a nonfatal drowning. On Monday, Miranda Ramos' brother, Gustavo Miranda, told KUTV that Brayan had been declared brain dead.
The Utah Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcement previously expressed thanks to the bystanders who assisted in the rescue, as well as Hurricane Valley Fire/EMS, Washington County Search and Rescue, and Intermountain Life Flight for their response.
The family is now hoping to return his body to Peru so he can be laid to rest near his parents.
A fundraiser has been started to assist with the costs of returning Miranda Ramos' body to Peru.
