BYU men's golfers David Liechty and Jackson Mauss won their Round of 32 and Round of 16 matches at the 128th Utah State Amateur Championship in Midway, Utah. Their victories allow both players to move forward into the quarterfinals.
David Liechty, an incoming transfer from Utah Tech, secured a 4 and 2 victory in his opening match by winning the first three holes and six of the front nine. In his Round of 16 match, Liechty overcame being 1 down through 12 holes by winning holes 13, 15, and 17 to finish with a 2-and-1 win.
Jackson Mauss moved into the quarterfinals after defeating BYU alumnus Cole Ogden 1 up in the Round of 32. In the Round of 16, Mauss overcame a 1-down deficit following the first nine holes by winning holes 11 and 17 to secure a 1-up victory.
Other notable results from the tournament include incoming freshman Austin Shelley, who defeated Lincoln Markham 2 and 1 in the Round of 32 before falling 2 and 1 in his Round of 16 match. Angus Klintworth reached the Round of 16 following a 3-and-2 victory but was eliminated after a loss to Art City Amateur champion Cameron Crawford.
Sophomore Parker Bunn and former Cougar David Timmins both lost their Round of 32 matches and did not advance in the competition.
The championship continues Friday with the quarterfinals and semifinals. Liechty is scheduled to face defending Utah State Amateur champion Bowen Mauss at 8 a.m. MT. Jackson Mauss will play Crawford at 8:30 a.m. MT. Live scoring for the event is available at golfgenius.com.
