Starting March 31, 2022, the Utah COVID-19 Transmission Index was replaced by the CDC Community Levels tool. This tool uses data to determine if a community is facing low, moderate, or high risk from COVID-19.
Under the moderate level of transmission, specific metrics are used to identify risk, including a 7-day average percent positivity between 5.1% and 9.9%, a 14-day case rate per 100K population between 10 and 324, and statewide ICU utilization between 6% and 14.9% specifically for COVID-19.
A transmission level is designated if a county meets two of the three required metrics. In frontier counties with fewer than six people per square mile, a 14-day case count of 14 or fewer results in an automatic low transmission designation.
In Salt Lake City, Mayor Erin Mendenhall issued an order requiring masks in K-12 schools. This mandate applies to all staff, students, teachers, visitors, and members of the public within indoor areas of public, charter, or private schools, as well as on school-provided transportation.
Exceptions to the school mask order include individuals with specific medical conditions, being outdoors while maintaining six feet of distance, eating or drinking, and certain athletic or performance activities. The order was set to remain in effect for thirty days unless extended by the Saltly Lake City Council or otherwise terminated.
Furthermore, an executive order from July 28, 2021, requires masks inside City facilities and vehicles for both employees and visitors. Exceptions for city facilities include communicating with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing using a face shield, being alone in a private enclosure, and children younger than three years old.
