In a notice posted to the Utah State Parks website, officials reported that the Escalante Petrified Forest area is experiencing a historic drought. The notice stated that conditions have been hotter and drier than normal, and visitors are asked to conserve water by fixing dripping RV hoses and limiting shower time.
Water conservation measures include a prohibition on washing vehicles, RVs, or camping gear.
The park's visitor center and museum are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Day-use for the park is available from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
Trail conditions may vary and can be muddy, hot, cold, icy, wet, or dry, with officials advising visitors to prepare for quick changes in weather. While well-behaved dogs are permitted on trails if kept on a leash, owners must pack out all pet waste.
Average temperatures were reported with highs in the 90s and lows in the 40s. The water temperature in the lake is approximately 65 degrees Fahrenheit, and the water level is at 30 percent.
Wide Hollow Campground is open, offering various site types. Standard sites in Loop A are available for $30 per night, and partial hookup sites in Loop A are $40 per night. Premium full hookup sites in loops B and C are available for $60 per night. The park also offers six walk-in tent sites for $30 per night, though most tent sites do not allow campfires due to stage 1 fire restrictions.
Other amenities include an open kayak and paddleboard rental program, a boat dock, and a launch ramp. The park also provides a sewer dump station and potable water for an additional $15 charge.
Regarding firewood, the park requires that any firewood brought in must be harvested from within Utah to prevent the transport of invasive species. Firewood is available for purchase at the park, and visitors are instructed not to gather it from around the park area.
