The Escalante City Council held a regular and electronic meeting on August 18, 2026, at the Escalante City Council Chambers. Mayor Melani Torgersen called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.
During the meeting, the council held a public hearing regarding Ordinance 2026-09, which amends Ordinance 8.04.040 concerning water connections. The ordinance addresses the rule of one meter per parcel, excluding commercial/residential (C/R) zones. The council voted to adopt the ordinance following a public hearing where no questions or comments were raised by the public.
In planning and zoning matters, the council approved a new home project for McKade and Natalie Cook located at 200 S 390 E. Additionally, the council approved a new water connection for the same property.
Brent Pickering of the Public Works Department reported that water levels in the well and springs remain low despite community conservation efforts. He noted that the disposal of non-flushable items, such as paper towels, tampons, and flushable wipes, has caused significant damage to the sewer lift pump station, including burned pumps and impellers. Council member Orme suggested adding reminders regarding proper flushing guidelines to upcoming water bills.
City Recorder Stephanie Steed announced a five-county regional summit scheduled for September 10, 2026, at Bryce Canyon, noting that registration must be completed by September 3.
The meeting concluded with the council voting to pay unpaid bills. Mayor Torgersen adjourned the meeting at 6:11 p.m.
