The Provo City Council is inviting eligible high school students to apply for the 2026–2027 Provo Youth City Council. This leadership program provides teens with the opportunity to learn about local government while serving their community.
The program offers hands-on experiences designed to help students become informed, engaged, and responsible citizens. Members participate in community service projects, meet with elected leaders, and learn about city government through activities such as attending public hearings, hearing from guest speakers, and visiting the Utah State Capitol for Local Day at the Legislature. Members also present proposed legislation to the Provo City Council and share dinner with Council members.
Provo City Council Chair Katrice MacKay stated that the program gives students a meaningful voice in local government while helping them develop skills and civic understanding. Youth City Council facilitator Nathan Sauerbier noted that students often transform during the program, gaining an understanding of how local government operates and realizing their ideas can contribute to the community.
Applications are open to Provo residents who will be in ninth through twelfth grade during the 2026–2027 school year. Incoming freshmen and homeschool students are encouraged to apply. Members commit approximately eight hours or fewer each month and must attend at least 80% of meetings and activities during their one-year term.
