Robert Wright III has announced he will return to BYU for his junior season in 2026-27 after having entered the transfer portal. The sophomore guard previously averaged 18.1 points per game during the 2025-26 season.
BYU head men’s basketball coach Kevin Young stated that Wright is the best point guard in college basketball. Young noted that Wright is poised to lead the team as the floor general and act as an extension of the coaching staff.
During the 2025-26 season, Wright became the second player in Big 12 history to average at least 18.0 points and 4.5 assists per game while shooting 45.0 percent from the field, 40.0 percent from three, and 80.0 percent from the free throw line in a single season. He scored in double figures 32 times during that season, including two 30-point performances. His 632 points represent the 20th most scored in a single season in BYU program history.
Wright, a native of Wilmington, Del., recorded a career-high 39 points in an overtime victory over Colorado. He also recorded 162 assists, which ties for the 10th most in a single season in program history.
Wright was part of a top scoring trio in Big 12 history alongside AJ Dybantsa and Richie Saunders. His 162 assists tied for 10th most in a single season in program history, and he recorded a 10-point, 11-assist performance in a victory over No. 23 Wisconsin at the Delta Center.
