High school football programs in Northern Utah are fighting to keep their seasons alive as the playoffs continue this weekend. According to a November 5 report, Davis, Fremont, Syracuse, and Morgan are all facing critical matchups to determine if they will advance further in the postseason.
In the 6A classification, No. 5 Davis will travel to No. 4 Herriman on Friday night. The matchup will test the Davis defense, led by Ben Dorius, against a high-octane Herriman offense featuring Filisi Filipie, who has recorded 1,542 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns this season. Davis coach Scott Peery noted that the game will likely be an entertaining contest of opposites, pitting his team's passing preference against Herriman's run game.
Syracuse enters their 6A matchup against No. 3 Corner Canyon as an underdog. The Titans, led by coach Mitch Tulane, aim to sustain offensive drives and limit explosive plays to counter a Chargers team that has been 4-0 since September. Corner Canyon is currently striving for a fourth consecutive state title under coach Casey Sutera.
In 5A, No. 8 Fremont faces No. 1 West. Fremont coach Nate Tuatagaloa stated that his team has battled through various injuries, including the loss of primary ball carrier Porter Hales, but remains excited for the opportunity to advance to Rice-Eccles. West enters the game with an 11-0 record and features Kamden Lopati, who is chasing 3,000 passing yards.
In the 3A classification, No. 1 Morgan will face No. 5 Richfield on Saturday afternoon at Zions Bank Stadium. Morgan is chasing its first 3A state title since 2024 and will attempt to defend its previous victory over Richfield, which occurred in the 2024 title game. Morgan coach Jared Barlow expects a physical game against the 10-2 Wildcats.
The postseason landscape features several high-stakes storylines, including Davis seeking its sixth state finals appearance since 2019 and Syracuse attempting to overcome a highly talented Corner Canyon squad. The various matchups across the 6A, 5A, and 3A levels will determine which Northern Utah programs remain in the hunt for championships.
