Intermountain Health unveiled plans on September 2 for a new Intermountain LDS Hospital located in downtown Salt Lake City. The project is described as a transformational investment intended to expand healthcare access and strengthen the community for future generations.
The new hospital will be situated on an approximately eight-acre site at 745 South State Street, the former location of a Sears retail store that closed in 2018. According to Intermountain Health, the decision to construct a replacement hospital was made following analysis of community health needs, patient trends, and growth projections. Leaders determined that building a new facility would offer more value and flexibility than modernizing the existing campus located in the Salt Lake City Avenues District.
The new campus is expected to include a 10-story hospital containing more than 521,000 square feet of space, alongside an attached seven-story medical office building. The development will also feature a public plaza at the northwest corner of the site to connect Main Street and State Street. The project is expected to support approximately 2,000 jobs and generate an annual local economic impact of more than $1.1 billion.
The facility is designed to provide advanced care with convenient access to Interstates 15, 80, and 215, as well as nearby public transit. Planned services include a full-service emergency department, a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, behavioral health access, and specialized programs in orthopedics, cancer care, and cardiology. The hospital will also offer maternal-fetal medicine, midwifery services, and family education programs.
Sustainability is a stated focus for the project, with goals to make the facility one of the most energy and water efficient healthcare buildings in the region. While construction planning and site preparation are currently underway, additional details regarding project timelines are expected to be announced later this year.
No final decisions have been made regarding the future use of the current Intermountain LDS Hospital campus in the Avenues once the new downtown facility opens. The existing campus will continue to operate as a full-service community hospital while leadership determines its long-term use.
