The St. George Museum of Art is seeking volunteer docents to lead tours and engage with visitors. According to a press release from the city, docents enhance the visitor experience by interpreting exhibits, leading tours, and telling stories to bring collections to life.
Museum Manager and Curator Meagan Evans stated that docents are a vital part of the museum's education initiatives. The museum is looking for individuals with a passion for community engagement, teaching, history, and art to join their volunteer team.
Docents undergo training regarding the history and collections of the institution. The training focuses on interactive techniques such as storytelling, making connections, and asking questions to encourage curiosity and understanding. Volunteers act as a bridge between the museum's audience and its treasures through engagement and interactive discussions.
Volunteer opportunities include assisting at various museum events and leading tours for 5th-grade students from the Washington County School District during the fall and winter months. These student tours allow children to explore their creativity and learn about the collections.
Interested applicants can apply in person at the museum, located at 47 East 200 North in the St. George Historic District, or by completing an online application on the museum's website. Applicants must provide a state ID or valid driver's license and undergo a background check.
The St. George Museum of Art is located in a former sugar beet seed storage facility that was converted into an art showcase in 1997. It is part of an arts complex that includes the Social Hall and the Opera House. The museum houses a permanent collection of over 1,200 pieces and is open Tuesday through Saturday.
