The Utah School Safety Center is providing ongoing professional learning opportunities to assist schools with the implementation of best practices in school safety. The center offers various training sessions, including the annual Utah School Safety Center Conference scheduled for June 9-10, 2027.
This annual conference is designed for a wide range of attendees, including school safety and security specialists, administrators, law enforcement, school resource officers, and school board members. The location for the 2027 event is yet to be determined.
Specific training programs are available to address different aspects of school security. The Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines (CSTAG) training serves as a foundation for Local Education Agencies to implement evidence-based behavior threat assessments through a multidisciplinary team approach.
This session lasts between 6 and 8 hours and is intended for up to 100 participants, including school administrators, mental health providers, and security specialists. The training follows Utah Code Section 53G-8-802 and Board Rule R277-400.
Additionally, the center provides training for the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) and the Standard Reunification Method (SRM). All Utah schools are mandated to adopt these protocols in accordance with Utah Code Section 53G-8-803. The SRM specifically addresses the process of reuniting students with parents following an emergency.
The PRE
PaRE Workshop 1 (3rd Edition) is another available option, focusing on establishing and sustaining school safety efforts that address both physical and psychological safety. This one-day workshop covers building vulnerability assessments and the development of crisis teams.
Target audiences for the PRE
PaRE workshop include student services directors, prevention specialists, and school-based mental health providers such as counselors and psychologists.
Local Education Agencies can request specific professional learning and technical assistance through the Utah State Board of Education Student Services Training Request Portal (TRP). This online tool helps coordinate support across the state to ensure LEA needs are met efficiently.
