Israel Flores Ortiz was released from a detention center on Monday, August 31, 2026, after completing a sentence for assaulting nine students in the hallways of a Fairfax County high school. According to a report published August 31, the 19-year-old Salvadoran national was transferred to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) immediately following his release.
Flores Ortiz was released three days earlier than his original scheduled date of September 3, 2026. While his release was recorded as having completed his sentence, authorities have not explained why he was released ahead of schedule.
Flores Ortiz was initially accused of assaulting 13 students, some of whom were 13 years old. On April 9, a judge found him guilty of nine counts related to the assaults, while one other charge was dismissed. Although he faced a potential sentence of up to nine years, he was sentenced to one year of prison on April 21. He served approximately six months due to time already spent in detention and other legal benefits.
The Fairfax County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Flores Ortiz was handed over to immigration authorities following his release. ICE had previously issued a detention order against him. Flores Ortiz, who crossed the southern border in 2024, was released into the country during the administration of former President Joe Biden.
While his current status depends on the immigration process, his final destination remains unconfirmed. Sources told N+ Univision Washington DC that he could potentially be deported to El Salvador or Honduras, though ICE has not confirmed this information.
The case drew criticism regarding the age of the victims and allegations that the school did not act quickly enough following the complaints. The intervention of the Fairfax County Attorney's Office was noted as a determining factor in the progression of the case.
