The Polarization-modUlated Laser Satellite Experiment – Quantum, known as PULSE-Q, is a 12U CubeSat mission designed to achieve space-to-ground quantum key distribution (QKD). According to a document from the Small Satellite Conference, the mission aims to utilize recent innovations in compact quantum sources and optical communication.
Quantum key distribution offers communication that is provably secure, regardless of the technology available to potential eavesdroppers. By using space-to-ground QKD, long-distance key distribution can be facilitated without the need for costly terrestrial infrastructure. The PULSE-Q mission was presented by researchers from the University of Chicago, including Logan Hanssler and Stewart Kristiansen.
The research was presented during a poster session at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
