Lehi residents will receive free curbside pickup for paint, batteries, electronics, and other hazardous household waste beginning Dec. 1. According to an October 14 report, the City Council approved the pilot program through Resolution 2026-53, which extended the city's agreement with Waste Management to include the new service.

The program, titled At Your Door Special Collection, allows garbage-collection subscribers to request a collection kit via phone or email. The kit provides a bag and instructions for setting items out for pickup. Residents paying the monthly garbage rate of $16.94 for one garbage can and one recycling can are eligible for the service at no extra cost.

The service will accept various items, including household chemicals like ammonia, automotive products such as antifreeze and motor oil, vehicle batteries, consumer electronics, paint, garden chemicals, fluorescent light bulbs, mercury-containing items like thermometers, flammable liquids such as kerosene and gasoline, medical sharps, and pool chemicals. However, the program will not accept tires, large appliances, Freon-containing appliances, ammunition, or explosives.

Waste Management representative Blake Leonelli stated that the program addresses safety concerns regarding hazardous items tossed into regular garbage bins. Leonelli noted that the company has experienced three truck fires in the past year caused by such items, including one incident where a truck had to stop in a church parking lot to dump its load. Leonelli identified crushed propane containers, consumer electronics, and chemicals as typical culprits. Lehi is one of two cities participating in this statewide pilot; Roy in Weber County is the other city involved. Waste Management intends to use data from both cities to evaluate expanding the service across Utah.

The city stated that residents will receive more information before the Dec. 1 launch. Inquiries can be directed to Lehi's garbage and recycling information line at 385-201-1000.
