Skyridge clinched the 6A Region 3 football title on Wednesday, Oct. 14, with a 21-15 win over American Fork during Senior Night in Lehi, according to an Oct. 15 report. The victory completed a perfect 4-0 run in region play for the Falcons.
In the win against American Fork, junior running back Beckham Bennett scored twice in the first quarter to provide an early 14-0 lead. Quarterback Jagger Fountaine later connected with senior receiver Omarian Sanders for a touchdown in the third quarter to extend the lead to 21-7. Bennett added two more scores during the game. American Fork's Nate Childs threw a touchdown pass to Zack Cowie and converted a two-point attempt in the fourth quarter to bring the score to 21-15, but the Falcon defense held the lead.
Skyridge finished the regular season with an 8-1 overall record and holds a No. 2 state ranking, according to MaxPreps. The Falcons are currently on an eight-game winning streak. Their only loss occurred on Aug. 13 against Mountain Ridge. The squad, led by head coach Justin Hemm, won its final four regular-season games against Lehi, Corner Canyon, Lone Peak, and American Fork by a combined margin of 106-81.
In a separate matchup, Corner Canyon defeated Lehi 34-7 to end the regular season. The Chargers scored 27 unanswered points across three quarters. Lehi's lone score came in the fourth quarter when senior quarterback Briggs Jensen hit Cam Wren for a 7-yard touchdown, according to the Deseret News. Lehi finished the season with a 5-5 overall record and a 1-3 record in Region 3, earning third place in the division. The Pioneers are ranked No. 10 in the state per MaxPreps and enter the postseason with a two-game losing streak.
Skyridge's dominance has been driven by Bennett, who previously scored all three touchdowns in a 27-24 win over Lone Peak on Oct. 2. Following that game, Bennett told the Lehi Free Press that he focuses on doing his part to help the team win rather than individual scores. Earlier this season, after a Sept. 17 loss to Skyridge, Lehi coach Andy Hadfield told the Lehi Free Press that he expected the team to improve as the state tournament approached.
The 6A state playoffs are scheduled to begin on Oct. 30. Championship games are set for Nov. 20 at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, according to Sports Illustrated. Playoff brackets have not been released, and Skyridge and Lehi will learn their first-round matchups in the coming days.
