The Salt Lake City School District announced July 13, 2026, that its students earned multiple top honors at the recent State Sterling Scholar competition, including three state winners and three runners-up across various academic and technical disciplines.
State Winners Recognized
The district's state champions included Mingchuan Cheng of West High School, who was named the State Sterling Scholar for Mathematics. Gemma Leonard from Highland High School earned the title of State Sterling Scholar for Dance, while Krishnam Goel of West High School was recognized as the State Sterling Scholar for Science.
Runner-Up Achievements
In addition to the primary winners, the district secured three runner-up positions. Highland High School students Luca Di Gregorio and Anud Hashi were named runners-up for English and Social Studies, respectively. Angela Zhou of West High School was recognized as the runner-up for Skilled and Technical Services.
Service Award Finalist
Beyond his academic victory in science, Krishnam Goel was also named a finalist for the Gail Miller Service Award. The Salt Lake City School District issued a statement congratulating all participating students and scholars for their performances at the competition.
