Extreme heat and dry, windy conditions are fueling multiple wildfires across the western United States, including a significant blaze in Utah that has forced the evacuation of the town of Eureka.
Details on Iron Fire
The Iron fire, located in Juab County approximately 70 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, was first detected on Saturday. The fire has burned more than 2,000 acres and prompted evacuations for the population of 1,000 in Eureka as well as individuals at a nearby ranch.
Protection Efforts and Damage Report
Utah Fire Info, a multi-agency operation, stated on X that firefighters successfully conducted an operation to protect the town, and no homes have been lost.
Drought Conditions and Cause
Kelly Wickess, a fire prevention specialist with the Utah division of forestry fire and state lands, warned that drought conditions are causing the fire to continue growing. Wickess noted that the fire was human-caused and remains under investigation.
Governor's Visit to Eureka
Utah Governor Spencer Cox visited Eureka on Sunday, noting that the state faced extreme fire danger and multiple active fires.

The Iron fire is one of six fires currently burning in Utah at different levels of containment. Much of Utah is experiencing severe to extreme drought, according to the US Drought Monitor.

Similar conditions are affecting neighboring states. In Colorado, a red-flag warning was issued for the southwest corner of the state due to low humidity and gusty winds. In Arizona, a wildfire near Oak Creek Canyon burned approximately 300 acres over the weekend, leaving some residents unable to return to their homes.
Forecasts indicate more extreme heat is expected across the American southwest in the coming week. Parts of southern California are under an extreme heat advisory, while temperatures were expected to reach 108F in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
The prolonged period of hot, dry weather and low humidity has increased overall fire danger throughout the region.
