Nearly one hundred Layton Construction employees from across the country participated in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk this October. The initiative included teams from the company's first office in Sandy, Utah, to its newest office on the Gulf Coast.
The nationwide participation included various locations. In Sandy, Utah, 50 employees and their families marched around America First Field. In Tampa, Florida, 13 Layton employees participated in an event at Raymond James Stadium that was attended by 30,000 people. Additionally, Layton teams participated in walks in Los Angeles and Phoenix, Arizona.
Layton Construction also engages in cancer-related support through other means. In July, Salt Lake City employees volunteered at the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge, which provides housing for cancer patients and caregivers at no cost. The 66,000 square foot facility hosts nearly 800 patients annually and includes 42 private residential suites, a gym, and a movie library. The company also supports cancer research through 5 For the Fight and has received support from Dave and Julie Layton for the Hope Lodge.
The company is also involved in constructing medical facilities, such as the recently completed University of Colorado Health Highlands Ranch Hospital. The project required over half a million man-hours and involved 250 workers at peak operations to install specialized equipment, including a state-of-the-art linear accelerator requiring 6-foot concrete walls.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women besides skin cancer. It accounts for 1 in 3 new cancer diagnoses in women each year, with an incidence rate that increases by 1% annually and is growing more frequent in younger populations.
