Layton Construction has broken ground on Convergence Point at The Point, a first-of-its-kind statewide innovation campus in Utah, according to a report published October 28. The six-story, 205,000-square-foot facility is designed as a live-learn-work destination to bring together students from various Utah universities, researchers, and entrepreneurs.
The project aims to host students from all Utah universities, ranging from community colleges to large research institutions. Convergence Hall, located within the campus, will house the Nucleus Institute, which was formerly known as the Utah Innovation Fund. The Nucleus Institute was established by Utah HB 503 to make investments intended to help qualified local businesses gain capital and facilitate job creation.
The urban model used at Convergence Point is inspired by European counterparts such as Station F in France. This approach combines research, workspaces, and student housing into a shared environment to encourage collaboration. The facility is expected to be completed in 2029.
Features of the building will include open working spaces, a VR/AR lab, a webcast and recording suite, a 500-seat event hall, rooftop terrace gardens, and more than 200 dorm units.
Jeff Palmer, Executive Vice President at Layton Construction, stated that the company is honored to participate in the transformative project. He noted that the collaboration between government, higher education, and industry entities aims to ensure Utah remains a leader in innovation.
