Guatemala has strengthened its institutional presence in Utah by opening a new honorary consulate in the city of Orem, according to a September 21 report. The initiative seeks to bring diplomatic representation closer to the Guatemalan community and bolster commercial, educational, and cultural ties between the Central American nation and the state.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala has appointed Marco Tulio Guzmán de León to serve as the honorary consul. The new office is located at 1256 S State St., Suite 204, Orem, where Guzmán de León serves in an ad honorem capacity. While the office provides guidance and links to authorities, the Consulate General of Guatemala in Denver currently maintains consular jurisdiction over Utah. Consequently, residents requiring passports, identification documents, or other official services must still rely on the Denver headquarters.
The honorary consulate is intended to facilitate contact between citizens and Guatemalan authorities and assist in organizing mobile consular jornadas. In July, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs included Orem among the U.S. cities that hosted a mobile session to provide assistance and paperwork processing for Guatemalans living far from permanent offices.
The Guatemalan community represents a significant population in Utah, though estimates vary. Nery Ramos y Ramos, vice president of the Congress of Guatemala, estimated the population at approximately 20,000 people. However, 2024 U.S. Census estimates reported by KSL placed the figure at around 12,000 people.
The Guatemalan government is using the office to promote economic opportunities, including trade, investment, and cooperation. Looking forward, Ramos y Ramos indicated that Guatemala is analyzing the allocation of resources in 2027 to transition toward establishing a full-service consulate. This process could potentially be completed within one or two years, which would allow for direct management of civil registries, identification, and passports in Utah.
