Taylor Hartman The first pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley needed water, desperately. This right place, as Brigham Young declared it, was a high desert, after all. To grow crops, live and settle, water had to be diverted. The Wasatch Mountains, looming above these pioneers new homes, represented both a challenge and a benefit.
