University of Utah Sandy Center to close at end of 2026

The University of Utah Sandy Center will close effective Jan. 1, 2027. All Fall 2026 classes currently scheduled at the Sandy Center will continue as planned.
Approximately 660 students have enrolled in classes at the Sandy Center this fall. Of those, 33 students register exclusively at the center for their classes. The rest also register for online courses or in-person classes on main campus.
University leaders are working with colleges, academic departments and advising teams to support students who have taken courses at the Sandy Center and help them identify in-person and online options that meet their academic needs for the Spring 2027 semester and beyond.
The U has had a presence in Sandy for over 25 years, providing students in southern Salt Lake County with access to University of Utah courses and services closer to home. In 2015, the U moved to the current Sandy Center, a larger facility that allowed it to expand classes and student services. Its location near a TRAX station and just off the freeway, along with evening course offerings, has provided flexibility for students.
The closure is part of the university’s implementation of House Bill 265, which requires the U to strategically reallocate approximately $19.6 million in existing state funding over three years toward areas of high student and workforce demand. Sandy was identified as one of the reductions in the U’s approved plan. Operating the separate instructional location requires dedicated facility and administrative resources. At the same time, most Sandy courses are general education courses that are also available through other delivery options, including at the main campus and online.
The closure also comes as the U is taking a broader look at how and where it delivers academic programs across Salt Lake County. That work is part of an intentional redesign of the university’s academic reach and aligns with the Utah System of Higher Education’s new regional framework initiative.
“Students’ continued academic progress is our priority,” said Paul Kohn, senior vice provost for Strategic Enrollment and Student Success. “We are committed to helping students navigate their options and make plans that keep them moving toward their degrees.”
Continuing Education, youth programming and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute offerings will continue at other university locations after the Sandy Center closes.
“We are grateful to the staff and faculty who have supported students at the Sandy Center over the years,” said Randy McCrillis, vice provost for Global Engagement and U Connected Learning. “Their work has helped extend the University of Utah’s educational opportunities for students through the Salt Lake Valley, and we are grateful for everything they have contributed.”
