The City of Moab Parks Department maintained responsibility for the care of city-owned green spaces, including 35 acres of developed parks and 12 acres of non-designated open space. The department worked toward the goal of continually enhancing and beautifying the city's park and trail-way system.
Key Parks Managed by Department
Several major parks were managed by the department, including Swanny City Park, which contains a skate park. Other notable locations included Old City Park, located at the intersection of Old City Park Road and Murphy Lane, and Rotary Park at 680 Mill Creek Drive, which featured music-themed playground equipment.
Additional Specialized Park Locations
Lions Park was situated on the banks of the Colorado River at the intersection of U.S. 191 and SR 128. Additional specialized areas included the BMX Track at 500 West and Williams Way, Dixie Park at 400 East 300 South, and the Bark Park, an off-leash dog park located at 100 East 300 South.
Seasonal Facility Closures
Seasonal changes impacted certain facilities, as restrooms at the BMX Track and Robin Groff Memorial Park were scheduled to close on November 1 for the winter season.
Wildlife Conservation and Fish Propagation
In a collaborative effort with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, the City of Moab utilized the Old City Park Native Fish Propagation Pond for conservation. In March 2021, invasive carp were removed from the pond. Following this, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources began stocking the pond with roundtail chub, a species found only in the Colorado River system and included on the Utah Sensitive Species List.
This propagation effort aimed to increase the roundtail chub population and assist the species in avoiding listing under the Endangered Species Act.
