The Salt Lake County GIS Steering Committee met on May 21, 2026, to address various technological updates and compliance requirements, including upcoming ESRI licensing deadlines and new federal accessibility mandates.
According to meeting minutes, the committee discussed the ongoing ESRI enterprise licensing agreement (ELA) renewal process. Lindsy Bentley noted that departmental needs assessments were being used to identify specific licensing requirements following changes to ESRI's licensing structure. Work is currently underway to meet the June ELA deadline, with further reviews scheduled for the August Technology Advisory Board meeting.
In a presentation regarding the Pavement Crack AI Analysis tool, GIS Analyst Jacob Perez detailed how the county is using ESRI's Deep Learning model and high-resolution aerial imagery to identify roadway cracks and potholes. The tool allows Public Works to prioritize inspections and repairs, though human verification remains necessary to account for potential false positives caused by shadows or power lines.
The committee also addressed upcoming compliance for the Federal Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Jeff Graham and Thomas Yeung discussed the April 26, 2027, deadline for digital content accessibility, noting that the county is responsible for all content on its platforms. The discussion highlighted that providing alternative accessible methods for information may satisfy compliance requirements if maps cannot be made fully accessible.
The meeting included an update on the Utah Geographic Information Council (UGIC) Conference held in Kanab from May 4-8. Robyn Haywood reported that the conference saw over 260 participants and served as a platform for the Recorder's Office to present its GIS Migration Project, which officials stated helped modernize workflows and build internal expertise while avoiding consulting costs.
The meeting concluded with an annual training on the Open and Public Meetings Act led by Helen Schroeder. The next GIS Advisory Committee meeting is tentatively scheduled for July 16, 2026.
