Cedar Middle School announced Wednesday that the first day of classes for the 2026-27 school year is scheduled for Aug. 12, following a series of upcoming community events including a schedule walk night and a back-to-school evening.
Upcoming Back to School Events
The school has scheduled a Walk Your Schedule Night for Aug. 6 from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, allowing students to prepare for the upcoming academic year. This will be followed by a Back to School Night on Aug. 10, which is scheduled to run from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. The school noted that elementary-level back-to-school events will occur earlier that evening, from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM.
New Communication Standards
Following the return of students, the school will implement an early out dismissal schedule on Aug. 14, with students being released at 12:40 PM. This transition follows a period of significant administrative updates for the Iron County School District, including the adoption of a new communication platform.
Transition to ParentSquare
The Iron County School District confirmed that it has officially adopted ParentSquare as its new communication platform. The district stated the move is intended to replace Remind in an effort to keep parents and students better informed and more connected with the school community.
District Boundary Discussions
The start of the new school year comes after a year defined by various district-wide discussions regarding student boundaries and academic calendars. Earlier in the year, the Iron County School District Board of Education held a public hearing on Feb. 17, 2026, to discuss a proposed boundary proposal.
Calendar and Boundary Planning
During the planning phases of the 2026-27 academic year, the Board of Education approved a traditional school year calendar on Jan. 30, 2026. While the board moved forward with the traditional calendar, officials noted they would continue to discuss various alternative options for the district's scheduling.
Community Input on Boundaries
The district also navigated discussions regarding school boundaries throughout late 2025 and early 2026. In December 2025, Business Administrator Todd Hess reported that small tweaks were being made to proposed boundary changes. By January 2026, the district held boundary open houses at Cedar Middle and Canyon View Middle schools to allow community members to view maps and speak with school principals.
Student Enrichment Highlights
The academic year also includes various extracurricular and enrichment activities. Past events at Cedar Middle School included the TRIO school group's trip to Southwest Technical College and the SUU Aviation Center in Cedar City on Feb. 19, 2026, as well as a STEM challenge enrichment activity held in January.
