A wildfire burning Sunday remained an active incident as it spread toward Parleys Canyon, according to the Unified Fire Authority.
Unified Fire Authority officials said firefighters were actively responding to the blaze as it continued to spread. At 6 p.m., the Millcreek Fire was reported near Tanner Park.
Unified Fire Authority Assistant Fire Chief Dustin Dern said some of the fire moved up the hill toward certain homes, allowing for structure protection to be put in place.
Dern stated that brief evacuations occurred for nearby homes, but residents have since been released back into their houses. Units will remain on scene watching the homes for several hours.
The Millcreek Fire caused a power outage affecting 1,164 customers in the Canyon Rim area, according to Rocky Mountain Power. The utility stated the outage was not due to a planned shutoff to reduce wildfire risk but occurred after the fire apparently damaged electrical equipment. Crews cannot assess damage or restore service until fire officials determine the area is safe.
The Utah Department of Transportation said the eastbound Interstate 80 ramp to southbound Interstate 215 East was closed because of the grass fire. Motorists were urged to use an alternate route or expect delays.
No information regarding the size or cause of the fire was immediately available.
