Bear Bachmeier has become the latest success story in BYU's quarterback development program after transferring from Stanford ahead of his freshman season, according to a report published October 14. The move has benefited both Bachmeier and the No. 8 Cougars, who currently hold a 5-0 record.
Bachmeier enters a matchup against No. 2 Notre Dame following a career-best all-around performance where he led the Cougars to a 24-10 victory over Iowa State. During that game, he threw for 329 yards and three touchdowns while running for 109 yards. He became only the fourth Big 12 quarterback to finish a game with at least 325 passing yards and 100 rushing yards without being sacked.
In 19 career games with the Cougars, Bachmeier has recorded nine games with over 200 passing yards and four games with over 300 yards. His season totals include 1,033 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and one interception. BYU coach Kalani Sitake noted Bachmeier's rapid growth and maturity within the offensive scheme.
Offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick has been credited with tailoring the offense to Bachmeier's strengths and helping him absorb the playbook. Roderick stated that the quarterback shows an ability to read defenses and execute plays at a veteran level. This success follows the contributions of previous quarterbacks Zach Wilson, Jaren Hall, and Jake Retzlaff, who helped elevate BYU into a perennial Top 25 program.
Notre Dame cornerback DJ McKinney, who played against Bachmeier while at Colorado last season, remarked that the 6-foot-2, 230-pound quarterback is a large player who likes to run and take shots.
BYU has a long history as a quarterback factory, a lineage that includes Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Robbie Bosco, Ty Detmer, and current Texas coach Steve Sarkisian. This identity was established during LaVell Edwards' three-decade tenure, which included several Western Athletic Conference championships and the school's 1984 national championship.
The Cougars are scheduled to face No. 2 Notre Dame this Saturday.
