The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City issued a Flash Flood Warning for San Juan County in southeastern Utah and South Central Kane County in southern Utah. The warning was prompted by Doppler radar indicating thunderstorms producing heavy rain across portions of Warm Creek, Last Chance Creek, and Croton Canyon down to Lake Powell.
Between 0.25 and 1 inch of rain had fallen in the affected areas. According to the National Weather Service, flash flooding was ongoing or expected to begin shortly. The threat includes life-threatening flash flooding of creeks, streams, slot canyons, and normally dry washes. Some locations expected to experience flooding include portions of Warm Creek, Last Chance Creek, and Croton Canyon down to Lake Powell, including areas within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
Officials advised that most flood deaths occur in vehicles and instructed residents to turn around rather than encountering flooded roads. People were advised to move to higher ground immediately to protect their lives.
