During the May 5, 2026 City Council meeting, officials recognized Sgt. Hickman, Deputy Breuning, and Deputy Gilstrap of the Utah County Sheriff's Office Eagle Mountain Division. The deputies were honored for their efforts in safely locating the daughter of an Eagle Mountain resident earlier this spring.
The incident began in March when the child was reported missing, triggering an immediate response from the Utah County Sheriff's Office. Deputies organized a coordinated search that utilized K-9 units, heat-seeking drones, and additional personnel. The department also used news outlets and reverse 911 calls to alert the public.
Through the rapid response and assistance from community tips, the child was located safe within a few hours.
A resident submitted a letter to Utah County Sheriff Mike Smith expressing gratitude for the deputies. During the council meeting, Chief Deputy Erik Knutzen read portions of the letter, which highlighted the speed, precision, and professionalism of the deputies. The resident noted that the response made an immeasurable difference during a period of intense fear and uncertainty.
Chief Deputy Knutzen stated that such coordinated responses are the norm for the Eagle Mountain Division and expressed pride in the deputies involved.
The City Council's recognition serves to celebrate both the safe return of the child and the collaborative efforts between law enforcement and community members.
