The Utah Department of Corrections has implemented precautionary security measures and operational adjustments at the Central Utah Correctional Facility (CUCF) and the Utah State Correctional Facility (USCF) as of October 21, 2026. These adjustments follow a recent security incident at the CUCF.
At the Central Utah Correctional Facility, visitation is cancelled until further notice for the Hickory, Aspen, Birch, Cedar, and Ironwood units. The Hickory unit has suspended programs and is under a modified lockdown. The Aspen, Birch, Cedar, and Ironwood units have select programs and services available while remaining under a modified lockdown. In contrast, the Elm, Fir, and Gale units are running on standard schedules with normal operations.
At the Utah State Correctional Facility, visitation is cancelled until further notice for the Antelope, Emerald, Bear 1, and Bear 2 units. These units have also suspended programs and are under a modified lockdown. However, the Bear 3, Bear 4, Currant, Green, Dell, and Fremont units are maintaining normal operations with visitation and programming running on standard schedules.
The current security measures follow an incident on September 24, 2026, in which an inmate assaulted a correctional officer within a CUCF housing unit. The officer was transferred by ambulance to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. While the investigation into the assault remains active, the department has previously noted that restoring normal routines requires staged, complex internal movements to maintain security due to threats from a specific group of STG-affiliated individuals.
Utah Department of Corrections Commissioner Jared Garcia stated that the team of officers and staff exhibited quick and courageous teamwork during the assault. Garcia noted that the department has zero tolerance for such attacks and expressed gratitude for the professionalism shown by the staff. Updates will be provided as leadership and security teams continue to evaluate conditions.
