Lehi is seeking a new full-time justice court judge after Judge Morgan Cummings announced plans to resign in October, according to a September 15 report.
The city is accepting applications for the position through Oct. 9 at 11:59 p.m., according to a vacancy notice posted on the city's website.
The position offers a salary between $147,886 and $190,139 per year plus benefits. Applications must be submitted online at justicecourtvacancies.utah.gov before the deadline, as no late submissions will be accepted.
The Utah Administrative Office of the Courts announced the vacancy on Wednesday, Sept. 9, and the Utah State Bar posted notice of the opening on Monday, Sept. 14.
Under Utah law, a Judicial Nominating Commission will review applicants and must send at least three nominees to Mayor Paul Binns within 45 days of the commission's first meeting. Mayor Binns has 30 days to select a finalist.
The selection requires ratification by the Lehi City Council and certification by the Utah Judicial Council. Once certified, the judge serves at least three years before facing an unopposed retention election, after which the term of office is six years.
Candidates must be at least 25 years old, a U.S. citizen, and a Utah resident for at least three years. They must also hold a law degree from a school that qualifies them for bar admission in any state and must live in Utah County or an adjacent county at the time of appointment or before taking the bench.
The city's vacancy notice did not include Cummings' exact departure date or his length of service on the bench. As of publication, no public statement has been released by Mayor Binns or the Lehi City Council regarding the vacancy, and the date for the Judicial Nominating Commission's first meeting has not been announced.
