The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City issued a severe thunderstorm warning for southwestern San Juan County and eastern Kane County. The warning was issued at 4:56 PM MDT on August 29, 2026, and was set to remain in effect until 5:30 PM MDT.
At the time of the warning, a severe thunderstorm was located 9 miles northeast of Big Water, or 42 miles south of Escalante, moving east at 30 mph. The storm was moving through an area that included Lake Powell and Dangling Rope Marina.
Meteorologists identified hazards including 70 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail. The storm was identified through radar and mesonet observations. Potential impacts included hail damage to vehicles, considerable tree damage, and wind damage to outbuildings, roofs, and mobile homes.
A tornado watch remained in effect for the warned area during the storm warning. Officials noted that torrential rainfall was occurring with the storm, which could lead to flash flooding. The National Weather Service advised the public to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building and to avoid driving through flooded roadways.
