Utah and Idaho have ranked among the four happiest states in the nation according to a WalletHub report. Utah secured the third position overall with a score of 66.45, while Idaho ranked fourth with a score of 62.59.
Utah achieved the top national ranking in both the work environment and community and environment categories. The state also holds the lowest national separation and divorce rate at approximately 15 percent and ranks first for the number of work hours, with residents working fewer hours per week than residents in any other state. Additionally, the report found Utah has the nation's highest economic security and the second-highest share of residents reporting supportive relationships and love. Utah ranked 29th for the percentage of adults with depression and 18th for adequate sleep.
Idaho ranked third nationally in work environment and second in community and environment. While Idaho's overall score was 3.86 points lower than Utah's, it ranked 19th in emotional and physical well-being, two places behind the Beehive State.
Other Intermountain states showed varied results in the report. Arizona ranked 17th, followed by Montana at 30th, Nevada at 32nd, and Colorado at 36th. Wyoming and New Mexico finished near the bottom of the national rankings at 43rd and 44th, respectively.
WalletHub measured happiness using three weighted categories: emotional and physical well-being (50%), work environment (25%), and community and environment (25%). The study utilized 30 individual metrics, including life expectancy and job security, based on data collected as of Aug. 11, 2026, from sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
