Wasatch won on penalty kicks against Mountain View to keep its Region 8 title hopes alive in a match characterized by contrasting halves, according to a September 16 report.
The game between the Wasatch Wasps and Mountain View Bruins was marked by significant momentum shifts, moving from Wasatch dominance in the first half to a Mountain View comeback in the second half.
Wasatch established an early lead in the first half, scoring twice. Kate Sargent scored the first goal in the fifth minute following a cross from Kennedi Hunt. Addie Nygren scored the second goal with 17 seconds remaining in the half, assisted by Savanna Hulme.
Wasatch coach Tara Lundberg stated that the first half showcased excellent offensive connection and midfield play, noting that the team successfully shut down Mountain View's build-up play from the back.
Mountain View shifted the momentum in the second half. Eden Peterson scored three minutes into the half to reduce the deficit to 2-1. In the 60th minute, Peterson assisted Leah Olsen to equalize the score. During the match, Wasatch had two shots that hit the crossbar.
Late in the second half, Mountain View was awarded a penalty kick after Leah Olsen was fouled on a breakaway. Wasatch goalkeeper Jade Pearson saved the shot to force overtime.
Following a scoreless overtime period, the match proceeded to a penalty shootout. While Mountain View goalkeeper London Becker made a save during the shootout, Annie Wright scored the deciding goal to give Wasatch a 5-4 win in the shootout.
The win keeps Wasatch tied for second in Region 8 alongside Mountain View, with both teams trailing Timpanogos. This victory comes after a recent loss to Provo.
