The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City issued a Flash Flood Warning for southeastern Washington County in southwestern Utah. The warning was issued following radar indications of thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the area.
According to the National Weather Service, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain, with between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain having fallen. The agency noted that flash flooding was ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
The North Fork Virgin River near Springdale spiked, which indicated a possible flood wave progressing down the Virgin River. The agency expected impacts along SR-9 over a period of 1 to 2 hours.
The warning identified life-threatening flash flooding as a hazard for creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses. Some locations expected to experience flash flooding included Water Canyon into the Hildale area.
Officials advised that most flood deaths occur in vehicles and advised people to turn around rather than driving through flooded roads.
The National Weather Service identified the flash flood damage threat as considerable.
