International Overdose Awareness Day is observed on August 31 as a global effort to raise awareness, reduce the stigma associated with drug-related deaths, and acknowledge the grief of families and friends, according to an August 19 statement from Friends of Recovery Utah.
In Utah, the day acts as a reminder of lives lost and the resilience of the recovery community. Residents can participate in local events scheduled for August 31. In St. George, a gathering was scheduled for 6:00 PM at the Gardner Student Center. Other Utah locations scheduled events for August 31, including a speaker event and flower planting at the Botanical Gardens in Ogden at 7:00 PM, a public event at the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake at 6:00 PM, an evening event at Huntington State Park for Carbon and Emery Counties at 6:00 PM, a remembrance event at Colton Pavilion in Vernal at 7:00 PM, and an event at the Stansbury Park Clubhouse in Tooele at 7:00 PM.
Individuals can take action through several methods, such as carrying naloxone, which is available at pharmacies in Utah under a statewide standing order without a prescription. Additionally, citizens can advocate for the transparent use of national opioid settlement funds by attending local county commission meetings to ensure money is directed toward treatment and recovery services rather than punitive measures.
Looking toward the future, Friends of Recovery Utah noted that September is National Recovery Month. The organization is also preparing for Salt Lake Recovery Day on September 12, 2026, and the 2027 Rally for Recovery at the Capitol in February.
