St. George will hold multiple community events to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, according to a August 13 report. The programming is intended to honor first responders, remember the victims, and recreate the sense of unity experienced by Americans following the tragedy.
The Patriot Day: Remembering 9/11 program was scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Historic Town Square. The ceremony included a bell tribute from the St. George Fire Department, guest speakers, children's choirs, and patriotic activities for children.
Following the main program, the Sons of the American Revolution and United We Pledge were scheduled to conduct a flag retirement ceremony on the Town Square lawn at approximately 6:50 p.m. Additionally, the city hosted a Field of Heroes, with American flags displayed on the Town Square lawn from the afternoon of Sept. 8 through the morning of Sept. 12 to represent first responders who died during the attacks.
The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb Challenge was scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Tech Ridge stairs. Participants could complete between one and five laps to symbolically retrace the climb made by first responders inside the World Trade Center. This challenge honors the firefighters who climbed upward while others attempted to escape the 110 stories of the building.
Organizers stated that the events were designed to remember those who died in the September 11, 2001, attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people and hundreds of first responders. The city aimed to rekindle the community togetherness that followed the event.
