Provo City’s Parks and Recreation and Public Works departments will begin a major project to improve the Provo River Trail and replace aging water and sewer infrastructure beginning October 26, 2026. According to an October 20 statement, the city will perform these tasks simultaneously to reduce the total duration of construction and minimize long-term impacts on the community.
The project includes several improvements intended to enhance safety and accessibility along the Provo River Trail. These upgrades include widening the trail to 14 feet underneath the State Street and Columbia Lane bridges. Additionally, crews will improve sight lines, head clearance, and grades while eliminating sharp turns. A new pedestrian bridge is also planned for construction east of State Street and north of the Macey’s parking lot.
Crews will also replace aging utilities near Columbia Lane, including water and sewer pipelines located underneath the Provo River. The contractor will replace approximately 615 feet of 24-inch sewer pipe and 300 feet of 16-inch water line.
While access to nearby properties and businesses will remain available, visitors may need to use alternate routes. Drivers should allow for additional travel time and watch for traffic-control devices, construction signs, and changing conditions near the work area.
Scheduled closures include Columbia Lane from October 26, 2026, through mid-May 2027. The Provo River Trail will be closed from October 26, 2026, through July 31, 2027.
