Grand County has entered Stage 2 fire restrictions according to an order from the Utah Department of Natural Resources. The decision follows forecasted weather conditions and extremely dry vegetation in the area.
The restriction order prohibits building, maintaining, attending, or using campfires or stove fires. This prohibition includes charcoal grills, barbecues, coal and wood burning stoves, and tent stoves, even when used at homes or in developed camping and picnic grounds. However, devices using pellets, pressurized liquid, or gas that include shut-off valves are permitted if used at least three feet away from flammable materials like pine needles or grasses.
Other prohibited activities include smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle, trailer, building, a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area that is paved or free from dry vegetation. The order also bans the use of fireworks, tracer ammunition, or other pyrotechnic devices, including exploding targets. Additionally, cutting, welding, or grinding metal in areas of dry vegetation is prohibited.
Small internal combustion engines, such as motorcycles, chainsaws, or ATVs, must have an approved and working spark arrestor to be operated. These restrictions do not apply to on-duty firefighters performing official duties or persons holding a specific permit or waiver issued by the Division.
Violations of these restrictions are punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000. County law enforcement will enforce the order.
