The Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity recognized Kane County Economic Development Director Kelly Stowell for his nearly two decades of work guiding economic development, outdoor recreation, and the local film industry. Stowell was featured in the agency’s newsletter, which highlighted leaders from across the state.
Stowell has served as the county’s economic development and Center for Education, Business and the Arts (CEBA) director since 2008. The recognition cited his role in fostering partnerships, supporting recreation projects, and promoting Kane County’s ties to the film industry.
Stowell stated that the accomplishment he is most proud of over the past 18 years has been helping build a culture of collaboration in Kane County. He noted that bringing together local governments, state and federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and community members has allowed the area to pursue opportunities that no single organization could accomplish alone.
According to Stowell, these partnerships have helped secure millions of dollars in grant funding for community development, infrastructure improvements, and recreation and trail projects while preserving the rural character of the county.
The area continues to serve as a location for film productions, which Stowell referred to as Little Hollywood. He noted that these productions bring visitors and spending into the local economy, citing projects such as the HBO series Westworld and Kevin Costner’s Horizon.
Looking toward the future, Stowell said the county aims to create more year-round economic opportunities while maintaining the quality of life that attracts residents and visitors. He stated the goal is to encourage private investment, create good-paying jobs, and ensure future generations can live, work, and thrive in Kane County.
The Governor’s Office newsletter noted that Stowell’s work emphasized collaboration among local, state, and federal partners. His efforts have helped diversify the county’s economy through tourism, recreation, and support for local businesses.
