Dallin H. Oaks, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, made an unannounced appearance Friday in the Days of '47 Parade.
The annual parade celebrates Pioneer Day, marking July 24, 1847, as the date LDS pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley.
According to an LDS news release, people along the parade route in downtown Salt Lake City immediately recognized President Oaks and his wife Kristen as their vehicle moved through the event.
The Oaks' vehicle appeared in the parade following the vehicle of General Relief Society President Camille N. Johnson, who is serving as this year’s grand marshal.
Before the parade began, President and Sister Oaks met with Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd and his wife Erin on Temple Square.
The parade featured messages previewing the upcoming Salt Lake Temple Celebration, which is scheduled to take place from April to October of 2027.
