A 4hesus-year-old man is in custody following an alleged stabbing at Valley Fair Mall that left a victim with life-threatening injuries. According to arrest documents, Peter Michael Larsen told investigators he targeted the victim because of his religion.
West Valley City Police responded to the mall at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Monday following reports of a physical altercation involving a stabbing near a kiosk.
Upon arrival, officers found that bystanders had pinned Larsen to the ground and had already removed a knife from his hand. While some officers took Larsen into custody, others treated the victim, who had suffered multiple stab wounds and was bleeding profusely. Fire officials transported the victim in critical condition.
A statement from West Valley City police indicated the attack occurred after a brief exchange between the individuals. The victim was taken into surgery, and no updates on his medical status have been released.
Larsen also required hospital treatment after being punched in the head by bystanders attempting to disarm him.
Following his medical clearance, Larsen was interviewed at the police station. After being read his Miranda rights, he reportedly told investigators that he targeted the victim because the man is Muslim. The arrest document states Larsen claimed to believe he is a catalyst and intends to kill Muslims.
Larsen faces charges of attempted murder, a first-degree felony, and prohibited dangerous weapon conduct, a third-degree felony. He was also charged with violation of probation or parole, as records indicate he was on supervision at the time of the incident due to previous felony violent crime convictions.
The arrest document notes that Larsen constitutes a substantial danger to the public based on his actions and stated ideologies. He has been ordered held without bail in the Salt Lake County jail.
