The Babylon Fire burning in San Juan County grew to 96,594 acres, surpassing the Cottonwood Fire as the largest active wildfire in the United States. According to a Monday morning update, containment for the fire remained at 0%.
The fire began on June 26 and was burning approximately 25 miles southwest of Monticello. Officials stated that five structures had been destroyed by the blaze.
Prior to being surpassed, the Cottonwood Fire held the position of the nation's largest wildfire. That fire was mapped at 95,807 acres and was 47% contained.
The Cottonwood Fire began on June 22 in the Fishlake National Forest near Beaver.
