Students and activists in the Sierra Club Utah Chapter's Student Clean Energy Campaign are working to commit school districts to 100% clean energy. According to a presentation from the 2022 Intermountain Sustainability Summit, these students are leveraging their role to advance clean energy solutions in schools throughout Utah.
The presentation, titled Students Steer A Clean Energy Future, featured Bekah Ashley from the Sierra Club Utah Chapter and Muskan Walia from the University of Utah. The session highlighted how transitioning schools to renewable energy can save money while improving indoor air quality and health for both students and teachers.
If all schools in the United States were powered by clean, renewable energy, it would be equivalent to taking one in seven cars off the road or retiring 18 coal plants. The campaign focuses on navigating successes, lessons learned, and obstacles faced while working within some of Utah's largest school districts.
The campaign aims to provide information and resources to support school districts in making a 100% clean energy commitment as part of the broader societal transition to clean energy necessitated by climate change.
