The Dog’s Meow has been providing pet health products in Draper for over 20 years. The independently-owned store focuses on building personal relationships with customers and offering specialty pet nutrition to remain competitive against big box and online retailers.
Founder and owner Alexis Butler established the first location of The Dog’s Meow in Millcreek in 1996. Butler opened a second location in Draper in 2003 after being encouraged by a customer. She noted that the store's reputation grew significantly following the 2007 melamine crisis, which involved contaminated pet food recalls.
According to Butler, the store specializes in healthy food options. Currently, the most popular products include raw and lightly-cooked natural foods. Employees like Brylee Knapton explained that lightly-cooked food uses low temperatures to kill bacteria like Salmonella while preserving nutrients.
In addition to retail products, the Draper location offers do-it-yourself dog washing facilities that can be booked by appointment. Customers can choose a deluxe wash or use their own supplies. While the Draper store serves both cats and dogs, Knapton stated that the Millcreek location sees more cat owners.
The Dog’s Meow maintains locations at 866 E. 12300 South and 2047 E. 3300 South. More information and online purchasing are available at www.dogsmeow.com.
